Flowers for the Mother: Building a Community Altar in May

In many spiritual traditions, May is known as the month of the Mother — a time when new life bursts into form through the season of spring. For me, it feels like a natural moment to pause and honor not only the mothers in our lives, but also the Divine Feminine — the nurturer, healer, and life-giver that lives both around us and within us. From the Blessed Mother and Mother Earth to the mothers that raised us (be it biological mother, sister or auntie) and the quiet shakti energy that rises through our yoga practice, this season holds a deep sense of reverence and a call back to the heart.

In that spirit — and in honor of Mother’s Day — I’m inviting you to help me create something beautiful: a community altar.

Rather than offering structured programming, I felt called to co-create a living work of beauty — an altar shaped by our collective energy, presence, and offerings.

I invite you to bring something meaningful throughout the month: a flower, a stone, a photo, a note, a trinket, or a prayer. Every piece you place will help build a shared space of remembrance, love, and devotion.

This altar is for all of usnot just for those who have given birth.

It’s for anyone who mothers: themselves, others, ideas, or the world. It’s for those who have lost mothers, long to become mothers, never knew their mothers, have experienced loss as a mother, or are reimagining what that role means.

Whether you're celebrating someone who mothered you, grieving a mother, becoming one, or simply connecting to Shaktithe creative, life-nourishing energy within — I see this altar as an offering of gratitude to the sacred mother energy that holds and sustains us all.

Wherever you are on your journey — in joy, grief, gratitude or healing — this altar is for you.

With you in practice,

xo Maura
